Weekends well spent with Privilee

I have tried and tested many of the amazing discount books, club apps and fitness memberships here in the UAE, but from food to fitness and festivities, there’s none that really wrap all of the city’s offerings into one, quite like Privilee does.

Privilee is our local club card that gives back without the points system. Whether you’re just over here on holiday, a true blue expat or you’ve expanded your brood recently and aren’t sure where’s kid friendly, Privilee has a four different membership plans, running between 1, 4 and 12 months, for the ultimate flexibility. Offering a card free digital booking system, making the whole concept more sustainable too, your whole weekend is literally a click away.

Partnering with a wide array of partners across the city and the capital too, boredom just isn’t an option. It’s not just the picturesque white sands of Dubai’s infamous luxury hotels that are on offer either, it’s that gym you’ve always wanted to try but didn’t want to commit to, or the busy hotspots around the city that now take 25% off your bill with pleasure.

If you’ve ever sat at home on a Friday morning, wondering what to do with your weekend, a daycay at the beach followed by a workout in the sun and sundowners on the Palm doesn’t sound too bad, especially when you know you can just walk in…

SUP in the City

Living in the city, the beach is often just a weekend away, but it’s the perfect place to go for a little SUP after work too, even just to get a little perspective. There’s a few great places to rent them from in Dubai, from beachside hotspot Surf House, to Ignite Surface on the Palm Jumeirah. But they get booked up, so sometimes it’s nice to guarantee a board by investing in one of your own.

My favourite place to relax is out on the water and now that my new home has direct access to the sea, I’ve been looking for a new way to fully explore it. We’ve got a wealth of wildlife like jellyfish, stingrays and water birds all around, so actually being out on the water is without a doubt the best place to see them.

I used to have a SUP board here, but as I was living quite a bit away from the sea front, it took a serious 4×4 to transport to and frow, so I eventually gave it up. The inflatable SUP is of course a much more suitable city-living stand up paddle board as you can take it literally anywhere with you and you won’t need a car for it either.

It comes with its own travel case and a hand pump too, which didn’t take more than a few minutes to blow up fully. Known for their reliability and rock-hard rigidity when inflated, the blowup version is a real winner. I got mine from MTM Marine in Dubai who stock them from WOW Water Sports.

Adidas X Parley: Run for the Oceans

Hundreds turned out at 5.30am last Friday morning at Nessnass Beach to support the global adidas X Parley initiative ‘Run for the Oceans’. Running not just to raise awareness, each attendee collected kilometres which translated into $’s on their ‘runtastic’ APP.

We made it down to run with the crowds amidst 38* heat and what felt like almost 100% humidity, sweating for a cause. It’s a campaign that’s very close to my heart, I believe it’s also something that everyone can take part in, not just on a run or at an event, but in all aspects of life. There is no ‘away’ so it’s important to make smart and sustainable choices when you shop!

Say no to plastic bags at the supermarket, single use plastic bottles at the gym and aim to reduce, reuse & recycle.

Why is it important?

One pair of UltraBOOST prevents approx. 11 plastic bottles from entering our oceans, this sock-like upper is made from Parley Ocean Plastic™️; upcycled plastic waste that is intercepted before it reaches the oceans. In 2017 alone adidas Running created over 1 million pairs of UltraBOOST Parley, preventing an estimated 11 million plastic bottles from entering our oceans. For 2018, adidas will build on this achievement and continue to fight against marine plastic pollution by transforming the threat into a thread.

What’s new?

adidas has launched them in a new Deep Ocean Blue colourway inspired by the depths of the Mariana Trench to creatively express that marine plastic pollution is not just a surface level problem, it impacts the ocean’s entire ecosystem.

6 Aussie Swimwear Trends for 2018

It may seem too soon to look into swimwear trends during the colder months of 2018, but if you want to make the most out of your beach look for the upcoming beach season, there’s no better place to look than Australian beaches. After all, summer and beach season are at their highest peak at the Aussie shores at this moment. Thanks to the different change of seasons in The Land Down Under, you can always rely on fashionable Aussies to set summer trends for the rest of the world to follow for 2018.

Crop top swimsuits

Regardless of your preferred pattern and color, or the shape of the swimsuit bottom, a crop-top for the top bit of a swimsuit is definitely very popular at Australian beaches. And, thanks to the various styles that you can find of a crop-top swimwear option, you can create different looks, from sporty and chic to girly, gentle and romantic. Of course, make sure that you get the best size for you and even look into different sizes when it comes to bottoms and tops of the same swimsuit since a crop-top can look a bit unflattering if it doesn’t fit you perfectly.

Boho patterns, frills and tassels

It doesn’t matter what cut of a swimsuit you prefer – if your go-to style involves boho vibe, you’re in luck, so far in 2018, Australian beaches are filled with colors, frills and tassels that would make any boho-lover truly excited for the beach time. If this is something that sounds promising to you, definitely check out the Camilla brand of swimsuits, known for its amazing boho swimwear designs.

Sporty yet elegant

Sporty bikinis and one-piece swimsuits that feel elegant yet gentle at the same time are also really popular this swim season in Australia. Essentially, the “effortless” yet comfy look of these swimsuits allow you to express your personality. Also, you will draw attention to the best aspects of your beach body since they are so minimal yet flatteringly cut. In case this sounds like your cup of tea, you should definitely check out the amazing White Fox Boutique swimwear.

Girly and earthy

Girly and earthy are the attributes that best describe the popular fashion street style called Mori girl. So, if you’re a fan of that particular style, there’s no doubt that you will find a perfect swimsuit for you among the many choices Peony Swimwear has to offer.

Retro-style swimsuits

Retro-inspired swimsuits with high-waisted bottoms are still at the top of the trend list when it comes to popular swimwear this beach season. However, every new season brings something new when it comes to the timeless cuts and designs. This year, while the high-waisted trend remains, there’s more interest added with prints, knots and straps. Also, you can easily find tops that pair with high-waisted bottoms but that still combine some other styles like a crop-top or a traditional bikini. In that respect, you have endless possibilities to showcase your personal taste and look your best at the beach.

One-piece swimsuits

A One-piece swimsuit will always be a classic but if you want to make an unforgettable impact on the beach, you just have to take a look at the confident Aussie ladies and the way they can make the classic one-piece more daring and fashionable. Really deep cuts at the front, one-shoulder pieces, straps as an accent detail as well as one-piece swimsuits with long sleeves will not only make you look fabulous but help you make a true fashion statement as well.

These days, fashion is all about wearing your personality freely and openly. This aspect is definitely becoming a part of swimwear trends as well. Just because there’s not a lot of fabric to work with doesn’t mean that you can’t create an incredibly personal beach look that will highlight your best features as well as your individuality. You can trust Aussie ladies on that.

The Biggest Beach Trends from International Fashion Weeks

Now that summer’s officially over, we can sit back and think about the things that were the trendiest on the beach, and we can definitely try to speculate about the things that will be huge next summer. Seeing fashion runways being transformed into beaches and checking out all the amazing outfits and combinations out there gives us many ideas about the way we want to look next summer. Let’s take a quick look at the most important beach trends this year, that will definitely make an appearance come the next one as well:

1. Swimwear
According to Funkshion (Fashion Week Miami Beach) – the simpler the swimming suit, the better. Having a swimming suit that’s not of a pastel colour was kind of unpopular this year, since the rocking colours were beige, navy blue and white. Things won’t change in the following year either – Issa di Mar’s and Liliana Montoya’s swim collection for the following year also incorporate these colours, with both the one-piece retro and the classic two-piece swimming suit being pulled off, but with a twist. Don’t be surprised if you see someone wearing a two-piece corset-like swimming suit, it’s so much in.

2. Bags
Woven beach bags have made a comeback this year – and we’re not only talking about the beach. If you have seen a girl rocking one to and from work, she might have been a fashion guru. Taking the very elegant Eugenia Kim Flavia or any bag from Frances Valentine to the beach will surely catch everyone’s attention. Moreover, light, woven backpacks were also dominant on the sandy beaches, and it’s definitely a trend that will be very popular in the following year, as well.

3. Accessories
You can never go to the beach without being properly accessorized. Having good-quality sunglasses, nice, summer-inspired necklaces and bracelets is something that never goes out of style. According to Elle, one of the most important accessories this year were printed kaftans and cover-ups. If you happened to choose one that’s cheerful and elegant, going without any extra accessories was totally forgivable. Moreover, choosing a nice summer-themed phone case, and nice foot-bracelets can also do the trick.

4. Shoes and tops
A girl can never spend too much money on shoes, and the ones for the beach also count. Having good footwear and combining it well with the outfit you’ve chosen for that day is totally an eye-catcher. Long tees that you wear as a dress (preferably a single-coloured one with motivational quotes) were very big this year, so mind these during the summer of 2018 too. When it comes to footwear, you don’t (and you shouldn’t) be wearing stilettos – Victoria Secret’s double-strap beach sandals or the classic and elegant Birkenstock shoes were, and will be, a total must-have the coming summer. If your outfit is on point, you can match these with whatever. It doesn’t leave the impression you were trying too hard and, yet, it looks classy and cute.

5. Hats
The bigger the hat, the cooler you look. A good hat has always been a must for a day at the beach, and this year, big, straw hats were very dominant. They don’t have to have patterns – Ralph Lauren released a summer 2017 straw hat collection with such amazing colours that we wanted to take all of them home. However, the classic big black summer hat was definitely a hit, and it can never go out of style. 2017 proved it, and so will the following year.

The things that make your beach outfit are not the swimming suit you’re wearing. If you keep it minimalistic yet trendy, there will be so many combinations you can make with the clothes and accessories. A tip for next year: choose a simple, beige or brown swimming suit, and you’ll see that everything can match well with it – even your new, tanned skin.

Loving AA Sisters Swimwear

Because it’s always bikini season here in Dubai, we like to keep our water wear interesting. I’m a big believer too in homegrown brands, passion projects created by the love of life. So AA Sisters Swimwear is a brand i’m wearing loving now. Swimming in Rose Gold

I believe a good fitting swimsuit is worth its weight in gold…

This is the kind of swimwear you instantly see yourself lounging around a pool in, somewhere exotic, like St. Barth’s for example. It’s swimwear that will definitely get you noticed and for all the right reasons too. Norma Swimwear

Norma Swimwear was launched by entrepreneur Merve Kardes, in 2014 in Istanbul. Her partner Cemre Kardes Inan, who studied interior design, joined the team and added a very characteristic architectural perspective to their unique designs. Not only are their pieces extraordinarily intricate, they are also beyond comfy. Norma Swimwear

They describe themselves as avant-garde yet wearable. I couldn’t agree more as I put their beautiful ‘La Favourite’ one piece to the test behind the boat wake-surfing last weekend too. Using Italian fabrics and certified rose gold accessories in their designs, the swimwear doesn’t warp or elongate (my personal worst), it’s also proved to be able to endure repeated exposure to sunlight, salt water and chlorine and the only care you’ll need to take is to hand wash it, like with most luxe garments.

Check out some of my personal favourites here:

Artemia Blue €296

Dorina I Navy Blue €268

Eurilla High Grey & Salmon €275

Eurilla High Red €275

Miladolina Salmon €286

La Favorite Black €288

Selinda Blue €286

Road Tripping Through South Africa: The Sequel

Coffee BayCoffee Bay to Jeffrey’s Bay

Dawn flickers. He’s gone surfing. A bit of an explore brings me to a rocky beach crowned by thunderous waves. Scrambling up a grass sand-speckled hill, I reach the crest to be faced by the most beautiful stretch of yellow, a yellow dripped in silver and gold. Black rocks, angular against skin-white dunes. Twisting trees, their branches and roots wound as one. He surfs, I run. Local villagers silently pick their way through shoreline crags, their wares in plastic vessels. A dog shouts good morning, snapping at fish in the shallows.

We bump our way down potholed roads, 9km of potholed road to the Hole in the Wall, a rock face with a gaping corridor to the sea. I keep forgetting where we are. This coastline reminds me of the UK’s Jurassic beaches. Today is the longest drive; 9 hours. We leave the sea behind us, climbing back into the beige hills, timber land, dusty roads and dusty faces. At last the road curves, the sideline turns to emerald, and the smell of salt hangs in the air. The names of towns passing by sound like a sailor’s ship log: Dutya, East London, Port Alfred, Alexandria, Port Elizabeth, Jeffrey’s Bay. The sun sets. A sky on fire, its angry flames licking at the blackening clouds. We finish today in Jeffrey’s Bay, and seek sleep at a surfing haunt. I go to bed telling myself I’ll do some research about a man called Jeffrey.

Hole in the WallJeffrey’s Bay to Wilderness

I wake up to the sound of the sea, a sound I will always maintain as one of the best. The waves, the shore, they’re so close I feel the tide at my toes. It is also raining, the pitter pattering of drops on a nearby tent are calling, ‘come-out-side-come-out-side’. Its been a few months since I’ve experienced rain, real spitting, random, heavy splatters of rain. The wind whips up the sea and darkening sky as I pace along the shoreline. Pierced by the sun, clouds create ladders from the sky to the sea.

Our hostel’s resident surfers are out in languid force as I return, the smell of a recently smoked herbal cigarette blending in with fresh coffee. Steadily, as if it never lost hope, the sun breaks through gloriously warm, and like owls, we creep outside blinking. Lit up like a diamond, each facet, wave, band of rocks, house window, shoreline bird is glinting. But it fails to hold out, and we drive through the most epic rainstorm I’ve ever experienced. Like a curtain, he sees it falling up ahead, preparing me but not for the full force of descending water. I can’t see the road, the rain comes in waves, and windscreen wipers unable to cope with the sheer deluge. The mountains are covered in a thick blanket of emerald, jade, lime; a pantone chart of the world’s greens. They curve their way to the sea, resonant of a female body form that undulates and falls. And then the peaks as we climb, smokey clouds curl over the top. Steam on a coffee cup.

Jeffrey's Bay
Plettenberg Bay falls away from us, more beautiful than the photographs, and we continue onto Kynsna. It is as if we have stumbled across a Wild West town; saloon balconies peek out from shop fronts. The river winds itself around the town, trees dips straight into the water, and the road curves along its watery stitching. Our plan was to stay here, but we head on, anxious to reach Cape Town by tomorrow.

He’s been told of Wilderness, known for its dramatic coastline, beach, and snaking river. The small hillside town lives up to its name. Coarse, haunting, an old disused train track totters on the hill edge above the beach. We are told a homeless, yet harmless, man lives in a cave at the end of the line. We choose not to investigate. The rain clouds hang in the horizon, sunlight desperately injecting through for one last time. The rain again, a sheer wall of darkness heads to batter the coast. I’m drawn to the raging sea, a wind so strong it blows the spray from the wave tops, herds of white horses. They gallop across the breaking tide line. I’m reminded of Cornish summers, curled up on a sofa, while outside the elements use the beach as their battleground.

Part 3 to be continued…

A Weekend in… Santorini

A lot of people say “you are ALWAYS off on holiday” and I guess that’s kind of true… There’s just so many places in the world that are begging to be visited, and rather than staying for one week or more and totally exhausting that country/city/island, hopping across for just a long weekend is a great way of discovering the best bits, whilst still leaving enough places undiscovered for any future work trips/weddings etc. Dubai is the centre of the world travel wise, and especially for Europe, Asia and Africa, there’s plenty of weekend-long excursions just begging to be booked!
SantoriniSantorini
What constitutes a long weekend destination? For normal people – I believe it’s max 4 hours away by plane? But I have been known to take the odd 9 hour vacay to Cape Town and Jo’burg… I think the key here is to make sure you’re not crossing too many time zones – that way you won’t lose a day and won’t be too groggy when you get back for work the next morning.
My latest travel adventure was to the sunny white isle of Santorini, Greece. Well, at least it was supposed to be sunny…I have to say, it was a total toss-up between Mykonos and Santorini when we were booking this trip, but a very helpful blog gave us exactly the advice we needed – Santorini has more than you think it does, it isn’t all couples and there are enough bars to keep any singles happy 🙂
Santorini
Landing in Athens, it was a quick 45 min transfer on Aegean Air to the island, where we were met at the airport by a private chauffeur. A mere 20 mins from the airport is the beautiful capital of Thira – (Fira). We stayed at THE most incredible hotel – The Tsitouras Collection. Seriously – I can see why it’s booked up already for most of the summer – it’s a 5 bedroom ex-mansion on the side of Firostefani (a seriously scenic and beautiful) walking distance from Fira. Each room is dedicated to a different collection of arts. Ours was the room of porcelain. Next door had a Picasso above the bed!
Santorini
Our hotel!
What started off as slightly wet weather – the odd little drizzle, quickly became a brilliant storm! We had just finished our sunset drinks on the balcony as the sight of two water spouts off the coast sent us back to the room to grab warmer clothing (of which I packed none!). Within 5 mins of heading back in, it hit, and it was brilliant! I’m a big fan of a glass of wine and a game or two of cards whilst a storm lashes outside, but this was so dramatic thanks to the white walls and beautifully clean terraces.
Santorini
Once the storm faded, we headed out for dinner to a lovely local fish restaurant (the oldest on the island). George, who was the son-in-law of the owner of our hotel is the most fantastic guide. He literally had our trip organised for us, which may seem off-putting to people who like the spontentaity of travel, but trust me, he knows best! Everywhere he sent us, we wouldn’t have found without him, and we would want to head back to again. One of the most awesome places we visited was the black volcanic beaches of Perivolos. There was an awesome bar/restaurant called Sea Side that you must visit if you are Santorini bound… Although during the summer, book ahead as the sun beds book up 4x days in advance!
Santorini
We rented a car (fiat 500 convertible) while we were there (again on George’s advice) which really was a godsend – never mind the rain intervals, we had to get away from all the (license-less) tourists driving around on ATV’s. It also gave us the opportunity to visit Oia for dinner, where there was a cliff side tavern that was another of George’s expert recommendations.
Santorini
Breakfast
If you’re visiting Santorini, i’d recommend you stay in Firostefani (Fira), shop local (gorgeous jewellery and leather shoes galore) and eat Greek – I’m craving some Tzatziki! A couple of things I don’t reeeeally recommend are 1) The boat trip around the Volcano – it’s long and unless it’s BOILING outside – it will be cold. Also the hot springs – not hot, but the sulphur is supposed to be good for your hair… 2) Greek red wine – bring your own favourites in through duty free… you are likely to be disappointed in the local varieties 😛 or just enjoy the sunset cocktails instead!
